Ok. I'm about to ask for information I thought I'd never even want, let aloe
want to act on. Up until this very morning the though would have been utterly
abhorrent to me, but I want to make a specialised LEGO head for a minifig [1].
The question is twofold:
What is the best way to remove the printing? Yes, I know, someone just asked
about slopes, but I don't know if the lore is different for flat pieces. Does
Brake Fluid work just as well for that? How does one do it? Soak the whole
piece? apply to fluid to a cotton ball and swipe? Is there anything you
should watch out for? How long does it take for the fluid to be removed
completely from the element?
And secondly: What's the best type of paint to use for putting my own design
on the head? I have a vast store of Polly-S paints, but water based might not
be the best way to go, considering how easily it comes off. Would testor's
gloss give a better finish? Ideally, I want it to look as much like a LEGO
produced head as possible... I was thinking a *slightly* thinned gloss (black)
might be the best way to go...
Any advice, especially from someone with experience, would be a help.
Thanks in advance,
eric
[1] I made a minifig for my Champions (Hero Games) character. He was so darn
cute, and the only inaccurate part is his head, which I can't really
reproduce... so I thought I'd just make one for him, since it would just mean
cleaning a Red head, like from the V-Wing fighter, and painting on simple black
eye markings...

| (...) I found a product called "nevr dull" which is a metal polishing compound on a wadding. I used it on several pieces, including transparents,( Mike Stanley has personally seen this) with very good results. You can search the lugnet database for (...) | Per Mike Stanley's experiments, soaking in brake fluid changes the ABS into something not quite ABS and that's not a good thing. Mechanical abrasion seems the only approach, all chemicals strong enough to remove the printing are strong enough to mar (...) (25 years ago, 11-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)
