The New Coke analogy may well be a good one. In fact, New Coke was chosen
overwhelmingly in blind taste tests against both Pepsi and Old Coke. The fatal
mistake Coca-Cola made was forgetting that beverage purchase decisions are not
made by blind tast tests. The market is complex, and many factors go into
decisions to purchase.
Similarly, if I were in a focus group, and were asked which of two gray LEGO
bricks looks better, I might well choose the new one. That does not mean I want
the product line changed. The cost (aesthetic backward non-compatibility) is too
high.
