I have successfully fit 137 2x4's into a large container by stacking them in
successively larger discs with studs on the side. When doing this, there is a
small amount of space around the sides that can hold plate or small, irregular
pieces, and there are two leftover 2x2 spaces that cannot be combined into a
single 2x4. It looks like these containers are designed/priced to sell 2x4s at
a minimum price of about 10 cents apiece.
I can't speak for the small container (which appears to be exactly 1/2 the
volume of the large container) since I haven't bought one yet.
