I'll drink to that!

Yes, I'm sure it's every female's dream to live in a society that is made up
of 90% males. @8^)

Granted, the pirate theme is rooted in history, but also in legend. Legends
are things that are made up, but are cool. So I ask you, how cool would an
all-female pirate ship have been? See Tom Reed's Emasculator to find out:

Yes, historically, in the medieval era of castles, society was 90% male, and
10% female. @8^)
> Space, what is the real world ratio of female to male astronauts?
Except for the recent *Town* subtheme of Space Port, every subtheme in Space
that I am aware of has been set in very sci-fi scenario, either imagining
the distant future of mankind, some human-like paralell species, or totally
alien races. There is no particular reason beyond sexism to not have a
balanced ratio of females to males in Space, especially if you are trying
not to encourage some very negative stereotypes in the impressionable
children who play with these toys.
> Star Wars/Harry Potter, TLC is restricted to characters actually in the movies
True, LEGO's minifigs from these themes have stuck pretty close to ratio of
females to males from these movies. The only thing to criticize here is the
ratios in the movies themselves, but that is off-topic.
> NBA, I imagine WNBA figures would sell about as well as WNBA tickets
So the WNBA is not as exciting as the NBA. Hmmmm... how could this change?
Maybe if, oh I don't know, from a young age, females received as much
encouragement to play basketball as males do. Maybe if when they played
with their LEGO toys, they got female basketball players to play with as
well as male players, it just might help curb the constantly reinforced
stereotype that serious basketball is a males-only event.
> Jack Stone, I guess it could just of easily been Jill Stone
Jack Stone is an abomination, and fortunately does not fall under the
catagory of "minifig".
> Town, Train, and soccer are all themes that contain a good selection of
> female characters and that is how it should be,
I would direct your attention to http://www.minidundo.de/ where you can
check these numbers for yourself:
Under the Town heading, I count 53 females minifigs out of 292 total, which
means that females account for a mere 18% of the Town population. And this
is their *best* representation in any LEGO System theme ever!
Under the Train heading, I count 1 female minifig out of 24 total, which is
a representation of 4% females.
For Soccer, it's 6 females out of 69 total, for a representation of 9% females.
This is, in your own words, "how it should be".
> but the bulk of the themes
> TLC has put out are fairly male centric.
This, I would say, is a very sexist attitude.
> I also hope this changes,
What themes or subthemes would you suggest LEGO investigate in order to get
a better balance of females to males? What themes or subthemes do you think
would be best portrayed by having *more* females than males?
> but until then the female soccer team was a great fig pack.
It was the smallest of steps toward a more balanced ratio of females to
males, but an appreciated one.
Here's to the future of the minifig!

First off sexist is a label that has been ascribed to me in the past, and I don't completely disagree, but I don't think that this post (...) (22 years ago, 7-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
