shows, among other things, a view of the gear lever gate,
which is layed out like the two halves of the Space Shuttle
spaced 1 knob apart, thus yielding a 6-position gate (5+Rev.).
However, even though the picture looks very much like
this could have been built using those 2 halves and
1x2, 1x4, and 2* 2x2 plates, together with another plate
or two (below if possible, above if necessary) to hold all
this together, the author says (and it looks like) that yet
another new gate part was made. The elongation of the
plate to the rear I would guess to be necessary to
fit whatever new part was necessary to fit the three locking
gears so close together; maybe a round-hole-z16 with the locking
hub extended out 1 knob, or a locking hub with a round-hole-z8
behind it?
I'd guess this gearbox will be a mix of necessary and unnecesary
new parts which will be decidedly more valuable if you also
own 8880, 8480, or both.
I'd have been more impressed by a tricky design based on
8860/8865-style sliding shafts rather than new parts,
but the lack of synchronization vs. the smooth shifting
of the 90-degrees-of-play locking hubs are probably more than
enough reason for TLG designs to continue on this way
(if only they'd use this in smaller vehicles!).
On the other hand, the sliding shaft method provides a wide
range of creative construction without ever needing
to worry about not having enough of the rare special
parts, so it is not affected by special parts turning
into unobtainium every few years, being available only in
large discontinued sets.
Hmm. So when's 8448 being released, again?
