A bit of hostility and controversy has erupted over a recent policy
implementation at the BrickShelf website. If you follow LUGNET's Spotlight
feature on the homepage, no doubt you've already read at least part of the
discussion. If you haven't, well, keep an open mind -- as always -- if you
do stumble into the thread. And if you're feeling the temptation to get
mired in the controversy, try to take a step back. Everyone is entitled to
an opinion, but if we let this situation sort itself out calmly, I think
we'll all have a lot more fun here.
Okay, so what's the big deal?
In a nutshell, the BrickShelf site is now moderated instead of unmoderated.
This means simply that new submissions go through a moderation (approval)
step before appearing. The site's policy for acceptable content hasn't
changed, however, but it is implented differently: now via pre-selective
inclusion whereas before via post-selective exclusion.
In a perfect world, Kevin might have had made a heads-up announcement about
the new moderation system prior to implementing and activating it, but --
as someone has already pointed out -- the world isn't perfect. Let's trust
that Kevin would have made such an announcement if he had known that such
a controversy would erupt.
Every large website goes through growing pains. Kevin has done what he
believes is best for his site and for those who use it. At the moment,
Kevin is managing an enormous task, and we could all do well to give him a
break while he gets through this. We should also rest assured that Kevin
will clarify things as much as possible as soon as he has a chance. Right
now he's dedicated to reenabling content as fast as possible.
This summer's BrickFest is now less than two weeks away (yay!) and with
BrickShelf playing such an important role, I think it's more important than
ever right now that everyone support Kevin's decision and remember that
Kevin operates BrickShelf on his own personal time. If you disagree with
Kevin's decision, please at least show him the respect he's due while he
gets through this.
