They are indeed the same. So are the joints in 8012 Super Battle Droid.
There are two fundamental parts, the socket, and the joint. The socket
has a Technic pin hole, and has a rim with teeth encircling it. The
joint has a Technic pin, with two plastic nubs sticking out the side
which engage the teeth in the rim of the socket. The pin is attached to
a circular piece with nubs which engage teeth inside the joint. Another
part is also useable with the system, the 2x2 plate with Technic pin
sticking out the bottom has been modified to have the plastic nubs to be
able to be plugged into the socket (if you look at it, it used to have a
circular ring, this ring has been cut and now has the nubs).
The Technic joint is actually made of 3 pieces (plus pins and axles to
hold it together), the pin with circular piece, and two sides. An axle
can be run through the middle of the joint (usually a #2 axle with half
bushes to hold the joint together, but can be other things). A technic
pin can be trapped between the two halves at the end opposite the joint
allowing it to be pinned between two half beams. An axle hole is just
inboard of this.
The Technic socket has a rounded beam (about 3 studs long) sticking out
of it with two axle holes at the end.
This system promises to be very versatile for making smaller mechs (the
joints probably won't hold up with those huge mechs some folks make).
