Most all of the current tile pieces have a small lip, or groove, around
their bases.  Presumably, this makes it easier to separate the parts
once they're clicked on to a brick.

Once upon a time, there were no grooved tiles.

So I'm trying to figure out - did the 1x6 and 1x8 tiles ever exist in a
non-grooved version?

(...) To my knowledge and experience, these parts only ever came in the grooved versions. Chris (23 years ago, 22-Apr-02, to lugnet.general)

(...) One interesting thing about that groove is that you can use a brick separator to pry tiles off. I wouldn't have know about it (or believed it) had I not seen Frank Filz do it when he was preparing for his move. Cary (23 years ago, 22-Apr-02, to lugnet.general)

(...) I've only ever seen 2x2 tiles without the groove. Also the early 1x2 grill tiles lacked the groove. --Bill. (23 years ago, 26-Apr-02, to lugnet.general)
