4. When you reply to a MOC take a sentence or two to talk about what and how
the parts are used, a simple "hey that's cool" is nice, but we all know that
the beauty lies within the system and perhaps we should look a little more
at the process and encourage the way in which we build and not so much
merely that we build in general.

I agree that this would help us all out as a community of builders.  In
previous years (1), whenever a new LEGO catalog came out people would start a
gigantic thread pointing out this or that feature of a model or a new piece
used here or there or an idea for using a certain piece for something.  It was
always enlightening.  I would look at the new catalog scans a second, third and
fourth time as people pointed out these details and see things that my initial
glance hadn't caught.

Now imagine is the community would post so vociferously about MOCs...i know
that I see a lot of cool MOCs that probably took hours and hours to build and
glance at them for maybe 10 seconds; but if there were a discusssion around new
MOCs posted akin to the discussion of new catalog scans, I would see these MOCs
again and again and start to get an appreciation for them and more inspiration
from them.  I think we could keep up the excitement that surrounds posting of
new catalog scans all year round.

(1) This year has been a slight exception.  So few new things were introduced
in the scans of the 2002 catalog that it didn't get quite as much attention.
But I think this was mostly due to the plethora of new sets coming out this
summer and fall...particularly the new HP sets.

Nick, and all, I too see this and wish it could be better, of course we all know that with thousands of members and dozens of threads, indeed it's difficult to keep up. But at the same time I think we could do better. We almost need a post outlining (...) (23 years ago, 31-Oct-01, to lugnet.general)
