Lots of software is popping up these days which speeds up the download
process. And they work, too! They work by starting many connections
with the remote host at the same time. If the remote host is the
bottleneck, it would normally distribute the bandwidth over the active
connections. Hence, the client with the more connections wins.
So this was probably not an improperly configured ftp client, but rather
an attempt to save some percent of download time by using a "network
speeder" program.
Of course, this kind of thing is like an arms race. When more and more
people use them, the effect from using them lessens, and they must use
even more connections. Just say no in the first place, that is my
opinion...

| I am familiar with normal "offline download/speedup" operation, and it does not cause any problems. This is different because it uses FTP and attempts to keep several hundred simultaneous FTP sessions going at one time. Very few FTP sites are (...) (23 years ago, 1-Oct-01, to lugnet.general)
