I have finished my D.C. Metrorail car.  It's a bit long for use
on LEGO curve geometry but it is a realistic length.  I think the
actual cars are 75 feet long.

Very cool!  I'm absolutely stunned.  How sturdy is it?  Would it stand
up to a child's playing?  Also, what's the interior like?  I can't
really see inside it very well.

It is definately sturdy to run around a track and hold up
to adult handling (holding from both ends).  It would not survive child play in
it's current form.  The interior is completely hollow except for  1 2x8 plate
running from roof to floor at each set of doors.  I could have added more but
that would have interrupted the corrugated roof.  There is a 4x8 plate on each
end.
