Brickshelf's thumbnail script produced an interesting effect: your original
pics are appropriately encoded as short-palette gifs but the script turns
them into jpgs. The jpg version is much larger than the original. An
undesirable side-effect, to be sure.

true, but unavoidable.  brickshelf was designed, as far as I know, to
host picture (photoes) of lego creations, meetings, etc...  since those
are pictures that weren't generated by a computer, they will almost
always be better compressed as jpgs...  while I guess Kevin can write a
script to create both kinds of thumbnails, and compare their sizes
(though I'd use PNG and not GIF), I very much doubt the diskspace saved
will be worth the cpu overhead...

Just my thoughts... :)

Very interesting! One of my co-workers is a math geek - the next time I see him I'll ask him about this problem. I think it falls under the category of math known as combinational topology. Brickshelf's thumbnail script produced an interesting (...) (23 years ago, 24-Mar-01, to lugnet.general, lugnet.build)
