howD all,
i've decided to host a contest :-)

this is my first one and so i've drawn
up this post directly from Mark's contest
last august.

so here goes:

--------------------------------------------------------
Et in Arcadia Lego Non-Violent Minifig Space MOC Contest
--------------------------------------------------------

With all the combative MOCs out there (guns, etc.)
I have decided to open a non-violent spaceship contest :-)
Basically, research ships, deep-space vessels, survey ships,
explorers, moonbuses, spaceplanes, etc.  All those
OTHER types of ships.
;-)

as long as it doesn't have any guns (sensors, comm arrays,
scanners, detectors, are all ok, and things like that :-)

I haven't decided on prizes yet.  Most likely they'll be
some small and inexpensive sets.

-------------
Contest Rules
-------------

- Contest entries will be accepted from Wednesday, March 7 to 12am (00:00)
Saturday, May 5th. Entries must be in the form of a .jpg photo,
even if they're done in LCAD. If you are able to host the photos on your
own site, this would be greatly helpful to me.  I will post the results
on my site "Et in Arcadia Lego" ( http://63.226.106.19/lego )
(or I will post a link to them from my site)
and I will also post some pics on my
brickshelf acct.   Please send multiple
views of your model if you want us to be able to judge it fairly.
(Judges so far are Paul Hartzog(me) and Mark Sandlin)

- This is a contest for non combative spaceships only. This means
no guns (and no patrol craft either), stick w/ the theme, plz :-)
Military craft, per se, are allowed but only those of an exploratory
or docile nature.  If the judges feel that the rules are being
unduly circumvented by your ship, then it will be disqualified.

- No Movie/TV stuff. This includes anything from movie-related books,
magazines, roleplaying games, etc. Plz be inspired by all of those
things but for this contest, no versions of some one else's idea.

- There will be one Grand Pize winner, selected from all entries. This will
be the winner with the greatest total number of points. See "Contest
Judging" below for details.

- Minifig only.  Mebbe i'll do some other scale contests later,
but for this one, its strictly minifig.

- New MOCs only.  Er, actually, i'm letting this slide a little.
If you recently finished something that qualifies (since Mar 1)
then you can submit that MOC.  But no dredging up old stuff, I'm
interested in new MOCs.

- Only one entry per person.

---

- Contest Judging:

- Judging will not begin until the competition deadline.

- Results will be posted within 2 weeks following the competition
deadline.  If for any reason I cannot followup, I'll let Mark access
my server and finish off the contest.

- Prizes will be awarded as quickly as possible following the judging.

Here is a breakdown of how the judging works.
The judges will judge the MOCs as follows, and the results will be
averaged for each MOC, yielding a final score.

Here's what we will be judging on: (there are a total of 100 points available,
and my points distribution is based on my preferences :-)

- 20 points will be allocated for overall design/shape (not color).  Interesting
designs, use of hard to use parts in the design, etc.

- 20 points will be allocated for exterior detail.  More points will go to
exterior detail that has explanation than to detail that is just parts
stuck all over the hull.  Be creative and thoughtful.

- 20 points will be allocated for interior detail.  Again, not just random
detail, but sensible detail.  How well does the interior detail support
the type and purpose of the ship itself.

- 20 points will be allocated for use of color. Designs which make good
use of color and highlights will be given a higher score than designs that
are all one color. "Rainbowed" designs will receive a minimum score of 1.

- 20 points are possible for engineering complexity. I'm not really into
highly technic models or tons of nifty gears, however a model which is
nothing more than bricks stacked studs up would not acquire a high
score in this judging category. A perfect
score would require a model of significant complexity, with a
number of moving parts and functioning features, like landing gears,
boarding ramps, storage compartments, access panels, etc.

I understand that not everyone has access to the best environment
or photography so we won't be judging on that basis, however, make
no mistake, if we can't see it, we can't judge it.

Storyline won't be a big factor in this contest, either, however,
it sure makes the presentation a lot more fun, so, Go for it!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be emailed to me. Once again, if you can host your
own pics, that would be helpful to me. Thanks!

Good luck, and have fun

:-D

(...) And the grand prize goes to.... Me! Just kidding. ;^) Just wanted to let everyone know that, since I agreed to help Paul with the judging, I will not be entering anything in the contest. You know, so it's all fair and everything. :^) ~Grand (...) (24 years ago, 8-Mar-01, to lugnet.space)
