I used to work in the toy department of a large department store.  The • markup on
almost all of our stuff between our cost and final retail price was about • 100%.
Some was even more.

It must be different in the States.  I have a copy of the Lego UK retailers
price list and even with all the additional discounts, it's impossible to
remain competitive with TRU, Argos etc once you add more than 30% to your
cost price.  It sounds as if US retailers are able to buy far cheaper than
UK retailers can (nothing new in that of course).

If I was a Lego retailer, I would object to TLG selling direct to a group • of
people who have the means to sub-distribute (via the web) at a profit. • Who's
to say that any product sold to RTL'ers won't find it's way back on to • the
open market at a profit.

This shouldn't be an issue.  TLG can easily have a requirement of • membership in
the club that the goods purchased are not allowed to be sold through any • other
mass-marketing channels at a profit.

This would be impossible to police.  For instance what's to stop a member
buying tons of stuff through the "club" and passing it on to their
(non-member) mate to sell elsewhere ie. car boot, discount club, etc.

Further, there could be little incentive
for a person to purchase from any individuals who were to try this because • they
can easily become members in the club themselves and get discounts directly • from
LEGO.

Not if they don't know about it.  i.e. how many threads have you seen
discussing purchases made on ebay of sets that are available cheaper from
S@H.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the idea.  I'm just playing devil's advocate
on this occasion. :)

Cheers

(...) Yeah, yeah, sure... I'll betcha you and Todd just cooked up this whole thing together just to get me all riled up and see how much of a fuss I'll make, right? ;) Seriously though, I was never thinking that TLG would have to police anything. (...) (26 years ago, 16-Feb-99, to lugnet.general)
