Well since we now have pictures of the 2001 German catalog
see: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=2690
I want someone to explain the new Lego Creator line to me. On one hand it
seems to be positioned to replace Lego Basic. Yet the new minifigures
compete with the scale of the current minifigures and offer more detail
(printed detail on the legs for instance) and more realistic proportions
which should make them more attractive to older children.

I can't decide whether or not I like these minifigs.  Although it is a shame
to that they aren't like normal minifigs the additional detail gives a fig
more character.  Mind you, the figs would probably loose there character if
you had loads of the same one (is there more than one of each sex?).  On the
other hand, the classic minifigs didn't look real which meant that it Lego
seems more of a toy and a fantasy playworld than an attempt to accurately
recreate reality.  Also, these new figs fine detailing looks funny compared
to the clunky, chunky nature of Lego which is why the normal minifigs look
better.

Also the sets seem
to come with videos and idea books as if a key to the line's identity was
their multi media aspect.

This is a worrying trend.  I was never happy when Lego started having the
instructions on CD for certain Technic sets; it just seemed to be trying to
make up for the sets not being interesting enough (not a problem with
Technic sets).  The inclusion of videos seems to be another attempt to make
up:
a) the sets
b) Lego's perceived imagination deficit in children today.

(...) Just a reminder/warning about European video tapes. They are a different format than USA tapes. I made the mistake about 11 years ago of taking a family videotape to Germany. They are the same size, and look identical. But you cannot play (...) (24 years ago, 9-Jan-01, to lugnet.general)
