Maybe not quite on topic, but while thinking about previous
guesses/wishes that people have made for future themes, the
perennial favorite Gothic (ghosts, vampire hunters, that sort of
thing) came to mind, and it occurred to me that this would be
a very natural variation on Adventurers in its second year. They
already have one undead antagonist (the mummy), so in some sense
they are already doing this. Maybe something Lovecraftian next.
Free associating off of this idea, another cool theme would be 50's
monster movies (The Blob, Them (giant ants), Godzilla, the 50 foot
man/woman, etc), which would be an excellent way for TLG to introduce
modern military sets without seeming to glorify warfare. In all of
these movies, the various armed forces are called on to defend humanity
against the inhuman threat - who could object to that? The fact that
military force is always ineffective (in the movies) seems beside the
point.
Not that I really expect to see either of these themes in '99, but
I guess it doesn't hurt to plant the seed.
