Ah. The trademark is actually 'MECH, with a leading apostrophe, which is why
I didn't find it in my previous search. (I didn't find anything for
BattleMech, though. It's probably not a registered trademark, but
non-registered trademarks still have force.)
It's definitely a descriptive trademark (obviously derived from
"mechanical"), so it's not as strong as a made-up word might be. However,
you're probably right and Lego's legal department will probably steer
clear.
