Absolutely right. On the other hand, the reason why Tolkien's stuff is so much
better than the scads of imitators is because it's a 'first-generation copy' rather
than second or third. Tolkien did such extensive research into the reality of life
and language and travel and such, which is what makes his world seem so real.
The research of so many other authors seems to be 'read Tolkien, AD&D, and
each other' which means that they get progressively farther from their roots...
and progressively worse.
(For some good medieval fantasy that's *not* ripped from Tolkien, try George
R.R. Martin's _A Game of Thrones_ and sequels. Other book recommendations
