Right on target!
George R.R. Martin seems to be a "writer's writer" because I hear his name from
people on author panels and invariably nobody in the room recognizes it! Since
you said it again I must now look him up!
You know what is funny about the stuff that seems like the author just read the
D&D manuals? Those manuals read like the designers just read Leiber's Lankhmar
books!
I went off to re-read the introduction to Fritz Leiber's Ill-Met in Lankhmar
reprint (1st of a set, unfortunately it seems to have been remaindered recently
and is not in stores at all.) According to Michael Moorcock, they were trying
to get fantasy published before Tolkien was known on this side of the Atlantic.
Lieber's brand of fantasy was written out of a thorough knowledge of classical
literature and the theatre.
