i'd love to see some pictures :)

ttfn :)

Well that is a tough question......

LEGO, the brand was produced in wooden toys from  1932 until the Wooden Toy factory
fire of Feb. 4, 1960.  The Automatic Binding Bricks (forerunner of LEGO today) was
first produced in 1949.  The LEGO bricks (Mursten) were first produced in the early
1950's, but with the side slots to the bricks and the early windows fit into these
slots.  Then around 1955, the current bricks came out (but without the tubes).  In
1957 LEGO came out with the Classic LEGO windows (#214 1-10) and doors.  In 1958,
the first sets with bricks with tubes were produced.

Now what is the first LEGO set #?  Well I would go back to around the mid-1950's,
and my guess is the #700 series of sets (#700 Wooden Box, #700/0, #700/1, #700/2,
#700/3, #700/3a, #700/4, #700/5, #700/6.  These sets had corresponding parts
packs.  The earliest Danish parts pack boxes had numbers in the 12xx (twelve
hundred range).  I have a 1223 and a 1224 from 1956.  Also the 700/e 10x20 thick
baseplate originated from this time, and was produced continually until the 1990s.

There are a lot more sets from the mid 50's, but I don't have the time to go into
it.
