I have lots of clear aquanaut and space pieces that would make wonderful
town pieces, if only they didn't have those silly pseudo-science-fiction
graphics all over them.

I know that I can sand them off, since I've used this on non-clear pieces,
but it leaves visible scratches on the clear ones.

Is there perhaps a chemical process that works?

Yep. Brasso is the popular one among AFOLs.
Personally I haven't tried yet. Lack of time and pieces that need print-
removal (that's a good thing, I guess :)

Well, I've used said Brasso on UFO panels, and it works rather well.  It leaves
the pieces slightly less shiny, with a windshield-like moire pattern when held
in the light (from directional strokes with the micro-abrasive), but it works
very well.  Just don't place any of 6979's unprinted pieces next to the ones
you've brassoed, and nobody will be able to tell the difference.

According to Craig Hamilton, it works fine on transparent pieces as well.

best
