They replace 'em. "The Ultimate Lego Book" talks about this a little: pp 79
shows a totem pole captioned "Totem poles like this one were sent to the
Carlsbad site to see if the strong California sun would fade the colors of LEGO
bricks faste than the Danish and English sunshine." and pp 80 shows two outdoor
giraffe models captioned "Over four to five years, the colors of the bricks
fade." (The models are quite faded: the yellow bricks look almost beige, though
it could be an older photo.)
