(...) Even earlier- this set from 1975 got a lot of those hats in it! It's even from the minifig-time the arms and legs were fixed to the body... (URL) western train (1976) even has a better of the hats: (URL) the hat appeared in some town sets also (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jan-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.town)

If you think that the cowboy hats are ugly and that it was better before without them, well then look here! (URL) a scan from the 1985 catalog, and what is one of the minifigs wearing?
