A local charity event has small decorated Christmas trees auctioned off as part of their fundraising efforts.

I used a 4’ artificial tree and decorated it with ornaments made using two different years of advent calendars (add wire hangers), various figures, and a garland made stringing transparent 1x cylinders (helps to have a Lego Store nearby). Wrapped “presents” in varied sizes (up to 6” x 6”lego “boxes” with complimentary “ribbons” and bows) were made from a variety of Lego bricks in varied colors (again, having a Lego Store with pick-a-brick helps) along with a few “unwrapped” Lego toys - plane, sled, etc.... Advent calendars, a tub of bicks and varied Lego items (pencils, erasers, magnets and such) completed the package.

This unique “tree” sold for more than the (donated) cost - and was the most popular “tree” in the auction spurring quite the competition in bidding.

So, in the sprit of the season, you can help out a charity and elevate the visibility of Legos to the world at large.......It also proved to be a surprising conversation starter as I was approached numerous times about Legos over the course of the evening.

Having picked up a few of the 500 piece “bonus” packs, for the odd pieces, we donated the “mainstream” pieces in the plastic tubs to a few aferschool programs to add to their assortments (my wife seems to think we may have a bit too many legos around the house.....). They were most appreciative. Give kids access to a 12 gallon bin of Legos and they finally have enough to really build something! The program director has been thrilled with the “play value” provided.

For some reason, it never occurred to me before to decorate my home Christmas tree all in LEGO ornaments (1). I didn't go crazy, just a few designs, but the overall impact was quite effective. Non-LEGO parts included: Tree, tree stand, electric (...) (20 years ago, 28-Dec-04, to lugnet.fun.holiday, lugnet.announce.moc, lugnet.basic, lugnet.build, FTX)
