Indeed it does Janey - the tilde (~) is used in FTX for formatting simple tables, you can read all about it here. You can only use a tilde as the first charater on a line if you precede it with the backtick character (` - by coincidence usually found on the same key as tilde).
| | As you have found, tilde works fine anywhere other than the first character on the line, but when used at the first character, eats everything up to the first space, assuming it is alignment information.
