For me, it was the 6626 Rescue
Helicopter from 1981, and I was 10. I wanted the rotor-mount because it was
unlike anything I had in my small collection up to that point.
My mother asked me specifically whether I wanted the set for itself or for
the part, because $1.96 seemed an outrageous outlay for a single part!
Well, I guess its two parts, because the
3462 wasnt of much use
to my decade-old mind without the
3461 to go with it!
Perhaps this was the moment at which I moved from a mere fan to a fan who
collects...
Anyone else recall similar epiphanies?

For me it was as an adult. Circa 1980 (I was 27), and it was the London Bus Set
#760 (#384 in Canada, Britain, Australia and continental Europe). This set was
first produced in 1975 in USA (1974 elsewhere). I found them on clearance at a
J. Kay Sales toy store in metro Detroit. They had 5 other locations around
metro area, so within a 1 week period, I had purchased 35 of the London Bus sets
for $7.35 each at all the outlets (I cleaned them out). Each set had 24 classic
windows, so I now had 840 classic Lego windows. An awesome set. Unfortunately
I threw away most of the boxes and instruction sheets, but I kept the mint
sticker sheets.
