I'd vote for flags or tiles for clubs to show where they are centered,
and dots of a single color for people. I like the idea of color coding
by event or year. If care was not taken, someone who moved could show up
multiple times. If you put a dot on for each event you attend, then the
map is always representative of recent location of people. The map can
be cleaned off of dots for older events (where the definition of older
event could even be the last one - i.e. the map only shows the locations
of the attendees of the event it's shown at).

Now that's an idea!  I (or someone else) would be sure to take detailed
photographic records of the dot pattern.  That is something that would be
fun to see develop as these fests get more popular.  Color coding the
various fests would make for a nifty record of who travels from where to go
to what.  We would end up with some people being counted multiple times
though, but hey, that's not too bad if there's a clear delineation between
fests.  I'd probably clear Brickfest 2003 off when I go to Brickfest 2004,
but keep Brickswest on there (and any other fests that I may be able to
attend.  Being Keeper of the Map may end up being rather expensive, travel
wise *heh*)

I like the idea of leaving them on as long as possible.  There are at least 25
colors of 1x1 round plates, so you could potentially include a whole boat-load
of gatherings.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could paint my LUGNET member number on the top surface of
a 1x1 plate?

I don't think that I'll be sending the map to 25 different gatherings,
thanks.  At $60 or so each way for shipping, it would add up awfully fast!
The three main US fests are certainly a good place to start.

I'm still wondering how to handle LUG's.  Now that I've seen the map
displayed at Brickswest, I'm rethinking the 2x2 tile idea.  I really liked
the clean, neat look of the map with just the dots on them.

Any other opinions from the brickswest attendees?

Adrian

(...) I don't think Chris meant 25 all in the same year. 3 fests = about 8 years worth of dots before you run out of colors. Whether that actually works or not would be a different question (I suspect once you get above 3 or 4 studs high you are (...)
