Would an AFOL on spring break with their family spend a few days of their
vacation at such an event?
|
I certainly would... the only problem I can see is its rare for everyone to
actually have a school break all at the same time.
|
Very true. It would have to be planned sometime in the middle of most people
schedules.

|
Anyway, let me know your thoughts.

I adore the idea of a fest in Florida... in fact... there isnt a place I
would rather be in the middle of a snowy winter in Ontario.
For me, the contests have no appeal, (not just ~this~ contest, but any
contest, at any event) BUT Im not saying its not a good idea. In fact, I
think many ppl love that sort of thing, its just not a hook for someone
like me.
Actually for me, an event is 85% socializing thru out the day and after
hours, about 10% formal activities or sessions. (Yeah, I know, thats only
95%... I never give 100)
Half of the time I blow off planned events in lieu of chatting with
someone. I hate to admit it, but I rarely even look at the MOCS, unless the
builder is right there, and we can discuss it. Truly its the ppl (fans) I
want to see and talk to.
|
Im recycling this from another post, but another idea that was tossed around
was to loosely base the competition also around some of the cook-off challenges,
where theres a public area to watch the builders, so AFOLs, cheerleaders, and
the public could watch from the grandstands -- at least you could socialize &
watch the builders. And cheer the Canadians on to victory! Ill provide the
pom-poms... Red & white, right?
|
As for the public days, its just not my sort of thing either, but again, a
lot of ppl really enjoy the masses viewing their creations.
|
And its real fun to watch people about 3-4 deep around a LEGO display in
Downtown Disney. :)

One thought on money... I have to always fall back on my love of LIVE (not
silent) auctions. I think its an amazing way to raise money, and I know I
(as well as many others) are willing to put their money where their mouth is.
If you could get your financial supporters to supply unique, interesting or
rare Lego items (Im talking good stuff here, not items that are of no
interest to AFOLS)... and maybe even as a bonus have a few top builders (in a
theme) donate MOCS for auction I think you would be pleasantly surprised on
how the AFOLS wallets would open. Just remember, out of country means no
cheques (checks - your silly banks wont cash them), and no one wants to
travel with that much cash. Therefore having someone (existing BL shop owner,
for example) thats willing to take credit and paypal is a pita worth going to
the trouble for.

Very true! Very good suggestion, indeed! Im still cant believe that Dan
Brown didnt put up more of a fight -- you totally kicked his butt. ;) But
true, that is a very good suggestion. Live auction before the awards are handed
out...

I hope you guys go forth with this event... darn time for me to get my
passport.
|
Thank you. I hope so too... and get that passport!

As well, at that time, I had no idea who I was biding against, had I known it was for the Museum, I would have perhaps behaved better (nah, Im not sure I know how to (...)
