The Art of LEGO Design is a great resource, but there also have been dozens of
journal articles, memos, books, and conference proceedings written about the
educational use of LEGO that might provide you with a more formalized view
about the constructionist educational philosophy.  These publications come
mainly from the epistemology and learning group at the MIT media lab, and we
have a few from the center for engineering educational outreach at tufts.

Greetings,

I'm attempting to prepare a speech on how LEGO toys are great as far as
versatility in play and educational purposes.
I'm having difficulties locating substantive resources to back my claims.
If anyone can provide info pr just point me in the right direction, I'd
greatly aprreciate it. Please email me with responses and thanks for your
time!

I don't know that this is concrete 'proof' that LEGO is educational (though
it certainly is), however you may want to check out this article by Fred G.
Martin (from MIT), entitled 'The Art of LEGO Design'.  Fred was kind enough
to allow me to feature it on my website a few months ago.

http://www.execulink.com/~apotome/artoflego1.htm

It illustrates how LEGO can be used to create many simple machines and
mechanisms, and some of the fundamental techniques used in creating larger
more sophisticated models.

I hope that helps you in some way.  Let us know what else your research
turns up.

Regards,
Allan
