They are setting up a shelter a few miles from me in Molino, FL, for
either 300 families (or 300 people, not sure which) from New Orleans.  I
dropped off 13 of the bonus Duplo buckets and 7 4107s today (all crammed
in 4696 buckets, which I have a surplus of, but needed the old style
tubs and green/yellow buckets).  The comments as we walked in with 20
Lego buckets were pretty comical, but the Red Cross organizers certainly
were happy to add them to a play room they were setting up in the
library of this previously closed elementary school.

As for money, if you work for a larger company, always check to see in
case they will match donations.  Sun does, so my donation to the Red
Cross will be doubled.

While we were battered by the winds from Katrina, damage was negligible
being 120-150 miles out from the center, so I consider myself very lucky
so far (Ivan, Dennis, and Katrina are a trio I never want to meet again!).

Dear LEGO,

Like many others, I can't seem to tear away from CNN lately, watching the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. One of the images I just saw was of hundreds of
people standing in line, many of them children, with the narrator describing how
tired, cranky, and bored the kids were. Most of them have nothing to cheer them
up or keep them busy, and the prospects for the future are not wonderful. One
little boy (maybe 5 years old) had a toy orca, but that was the extent of the
toys I saw.

I don't know if this is something that would be logistically possible or even
welcome, but I can't help but think that a truckload or two of LEGO sets dropped
off at the Houston Astrodome would go a long ways towards keeping thousands of
kids occupied, and it might help boost morale during a very desperate time in
many peoples' lives.

Sincerely,
Kelly McKiernan
