Why the change of heart? Not that I disagree with you, just curious...

I realize that you like the Mutant Squid set best amongst the AT sets for
2002, but isn't it also comprised largely of useless elements unless you are
trying to make a squid or some such thing?

In the real world of building, I have compromised between the new canopies
(which are limiting but still cool), and my own bendy-arm solution for the
tentacles.  None of the elements I am using are from the Mutant Squid set
though, I have preferred the black and red elements of #4793 Ogle Shark Sub
even though I agree that that set stinks in terms of its intended design.
Plus I wanted 8 of those grey arms, even though they kinda suck too (but, I
had a VERY specific use for these in mind when I obtained them).

I can't see my wanting many more of those Squid sets unless I decide to
build a giant medusa head or something...

In 5-10 years, will we be raving about the JS-style bumpers and spoilers of
the 2002 AT sets as we do about the castle pitchfork, garage doors, or even
the 1x2 half stud plate? Not bloody likely...

Dear TLG, I'll keep this short and sweet. It's abundantly clear from the cluttered, busy graphics and poor set design of the new Alpha Team sets and MANY other themes that a significant percentage of the people in your organization don't play with (...)
