Dear TLG,

The 2002 Alpha Team sets initially had me very excited.  I loved Aquazone
and was looking forward to some cool new subs and a base.  Upon getting a
closer look at these sets I was disappointed at the lackluster design and
even more upset by the widespread use of overspecialized pieces that were
clearly employed to make the sets LOOK more interesting.  These pieces DO
NOT make the sets more fun to play with, they make the sets much LESS
interesting since these pieces have extremely limited flexibility because
they're NOT bricks.  Not even close.  Stop trying to compete with Playmobil!
Most galling was the discovery that the Ogel base did not come with pieces
that could form curved walls in between the UFO plates.  Instead, you opted
for the flimsy, one-use flexible plastic sheets used for sails.

I bought the Ogel Shark Sub because I wanted a few of the new click-hinge
arm pieces (which are fantastic) but after I put the model together, I was
shocked at how "loose" it was.  This thing rattles like a chain link fence!
It's so flimsy that I can't imagine any child from your target audience
playing with it for more than a few seconds before it falls apart in their
hands.  TLG, leave this kind slop-job construction to your competitors
(Best-Lock comes to mind!).

On the plus side, the new arm pieces are great, the new smoke canopies and
split-taper slopes (used to border the new cockpit pieces) are cool, and I
love the redesigned skull heads.

(...) I'll agree with everything except the arm pieces. I don't like the Arm pieces because they don't have any means by which to attach other pieces, except at the wrist. Why aren't there any studs or technic holes on the sides of these things? No (...) (22 years ago, 22-Jan-02, to lugnet.dear-lego)
