You know, I've been doing these for months in plain text using Notepad.  I
wish I'd had enough brains to ask if there were an easier way.  :)

In lugnet.db.inv, Dan Boger writes:
Well, the way we format our inventories is a tab delimited text file,
with the following columns:

Quantity, Ldraw #, Bag number (if applicable), Color, Description, Notes.

To do that efficiently, we use a couple of excel sheets that will do part
name/number lookups for you.  I've been working on a linux perl script
that will help writing invs, but it's still in beta...  And I haven't
been working on it recently. :/  If you want that, I have no problem
email it to you.  If you want the excel sheets, I'll put them up on
peeron:

http://peeron.com/tmp/blank.xls  <---  this is a blank inventory template
http://peeron.com/tmp/parts.xls  <---  this is the parts list

To use these, you should copy them both to the same directory, open the
parts.xls first, and then the blank.xls.  It'll probably complain about
circular references, but you can safely ignore that.  Then, just type in
the part number in the number column, and it'll fill out the part
description.  Or, type in the part description (e.g. the LDraw name),
and it'll fill out the part number.

We should really write up a page about it, but for now, I hope this will
help.

HTH, :)
