I think you're missing the point Bill. Your examples don't work here.

Rather ask what would happen if Canon makes change to lenses mount
[ruining the 'system' & breaking backwards compatibility]. And I don't
think that toy x non-toy makes a big difference here.

Just as an aside, Canon HAS screwed over customers lens mount changes.  I'm not
sure if you were around for the Hi8 era, when the Canon L1/L2 sported a lens
mount called a "VL type lens".  Admittedly, it was only for two generations of
consumer video cameras, but Canon pushed the idea of an interchangeable lens
system quite strongly on customers.  Later Canon models (XL1, XL1s) don't use
the same mount.  Yet the core customer for that range of camera, the yuppie
amateur, very likely would have upgraded from those high end Hi8 models to the
DV models, wanting to keep their lenses.

The same has happened when manufacturers went to new mounts (photo or video) to
offer new features their customers would respond to:  Electronic autofocusing,
etc.

That said, people make a decision and often dump their investment in lenses of
one type, and buy new ones.  You see entire collections of lenses in the used
cabinet at photo stores.

The only market where the camera lens has stayed relatively stable is the
professional film and broadcast television markets.  There, the same lens mount
as well as servo control interface has remained the same, or, adapter optics are
available.  Why?  The investment is far too great.  But I don't think someone's
investment in Lego carries the same amount of consideration as a professional
television freelancer with $10-40K in broadcast lenses, hence the dominance of
existing professional lens mounts.

Calum
