I think you're missing the point Bill. Your examples don't work here.

Rather ask what would happen if Canon makes change to lenses mount
[ruining the 'system' & breaking backwards compatibility]. And I don't
think that toy x non-toy makes a big difference here.

There is only one worse thing {from this point of view} LEGO can make -
change the brick dimensions.

(...) Just as an aside, Canon HAS screwed over customers lens mount changes. I'm not sure if you were around for the Hi8 era, when the Canon L1/L2 sported a lens mount called a "VL type lens". Admittedly, it was only for two generations of consumer (...) (20 years ago, 14-May-04, to lugnet.color)
