However, running concensus is that shiny chrome is indeed going away.

That's a shame. The new colour isn't any where near a suitable replacement. Not
that I don't like it, but I think it's a mistake to get rid on the old shiney
one.

Why is it going away?  Well, without going into too much detail, shiny chrome is
ridicously expensive and complicated to produce.

That's not really a valid reason not to make something though. All it means it
the price per piece is a bit higher, and I for one am prepared to pay it. It's
not like the few pieces they put in any one set ever made the price
unaffordable. People were even prepared to pay the premium price for the UCS
Naboo fighter just to get all those chrome pieces.

So, it seems that shiny chrome is on the way out.  But somehow I doubt gone.  My
guess is that the molds still exist and that they can be made.  I think LEGO is
just going to make shiny chrome parts a little more judiciously from here on
out.

It was never used much before, but what was used was very tasty. It's a great
colour for giving a model a bit of 'bling', which the new colour doesn't do as
well. I don't care if the part selection is increased or not either - the few
little detailing parts we had were perfectly adequate. So far 'a little more
judiciously' seems to mean 'not at all' though, and that saddens me.

Also, I first noticed the new colour in those little racer sets. If it was
really introduced to try and keep the price down, why then did they put them in
those useless, expensive plastic boxes? I'd rather have proper chrome than a
plastic box that goes stright in the bin.

(...) I'm with you. I'd rather shiny chrome be another palate that LEGO maintain in it's arsenal of bling colors. Pretty much all the reasons you said. You can rest (easy?) that a very similar discussion is going on amongst the ambassadors. Keep up (...) (18 years ago, 19-Apr-06, to lugnet.color)

(...) It comes down to they weren't worried about what you want, or that the packages are just garbage, they were worried as to catching the eyes and bucks of the kids and parents. The bottom line is all that really matters in the end. (18 years ago, 20-Apr-06, to lugnet.color)
