My PERSONAL standards for completeness say that I must have evidence of
a copy of the set. To this extent, I do not yet consider myself Pirate
set complete (I'm actually striving for extra credit in Pirates) even
though I am 99% convinced I have minifigs traceable to a copy of 6251 (I
was looking through a haul of LEGO bought from a kid and was trying to
figure out what pirate sets were represented after pulling most of them
out, I was left with less than 10 minifigs, and nothing obvious until I
remembered that 6251 is one of the few sets with the Pirate Babe, and
sure enough, the other four minifigs were represented also, alas, I
don't have a box - on the other hand, due to my level of confidence that
I do have parts which came out of a 6251 box [I assume I actually have 2
or 3 or 4 copies of 6251 from various eBay minifig lots], I'll be
willing to call myself complete when I get the box - I think there are
actually only a few small sets for which I don't have boxes or poly bags
for, I do have instructions for every Pirate set which had them - I
almost certainly don't have all packaging variations [how could I if I
don't even have the box or polybag for some small sets?]).
I also see a PERFECTLY valid claiming completeness by virtue of being
able to build every set in the theme at the same time (though I might
argue that you then need to get two copies of 10000 to satisfy this).
On another hand, I would be satisfied to consider myself 9V Train
complete on the basis of having 5 My Trains, at least one of each style
and one of each color. In fact, I would not even require the 5th one to
be complete, all I'll need is the color bag. Of course I'm not likely to
be 9V Train complete anytime soon, I just don't have the willingness to
pay through the nose for a few of the sets (and while the Legends and
Classics series may drive down prices on some of those sets, I'm not
sure they'll cover them all, and drive the prices low enough for me to
get a copy of the original set).
I seriously doubt anyone can claim "king of the hill" on what it means
to be complete. Why? Because there is NO way you can PROVE to me that
every single set in your collection indeed has parts which were shipped
from the factory in that set. Why? Because I'm pretty certain there are
sets which contain non-unique parts which were not factory sealed.
Additionally, I would essentially require that person to have every set
in EVERY packaging variation, though I might not require them to have
the set from every marketting region (since different marketting regions
come with different catalogs inside even though otherwise the packaging
may be the same). I seriously doubt even TLC has a collection this
complete (I'm not even sure they have one of every set). Given this, any
definition of completeness is really just a rationalization of what your
personal goals are, and frankly, YOUR personal goals are a lot more
important than my opinion of them.
Anyone got an empty 6251 box they want to sell me?

| (...) Man, you posted this one week too late. I just got a sealed 6251 ($10) last week. Finding the whole collector thing silly, I tossed the box as is my usual wont (I'm a bad enough pack-rat as it is). If I get another (looking at sky for blue (...) (23 years ago, 8-Jun-01, to lugnet.pirates)

| I've got a few question for those of you who originally bought the Guarded Inn. Did the yellow saddle come with one clip or two? Were the heads of the minifigs solid or hollow? I'm thinking that's the only two elements in the 6067 set LEGO might (...) (23 years ago, 8-Jun-01, to lugnet.castle)
