Hi, i've recently wandered into the dark side, non space Lego. Always
had a penchant for castles and fortresses of the ages, and decided to
try Castle (When was the last true Space Lego, when will be the
next?!).

The evolution (or degeneration/juniorization) of the Space theme is similar
to the Castle theme...most would agree that the "Golden Age" of sets for
both of these themes has past, so we all have to be a little more creative
(than the people who are designing the current sets)

From a little research i see that the current crop of sets ain't
great, but i don't have much choice and it's kind of growing on me!

Welcome home! (a man's Castle is his home, or something)

Apart from this years sets, are any of the Ninja series worth getting.
From what i've seen, they don't really appeal to me or my medieval
likings.

This year's Castle rebirth is a whole seperate
thread/discussion...lol...great figs, weak designs, high price to piece
ratio etc.

Ninja theme Castle sets are an acquired taste...
Many people dislike this theme as much or more than Fright Knights...lol

I am not a fan of Fright Knights (since my Castle collection started with
the 375 Yellow Castle...the Galaxy explorer of Castle theme).  However, now
that the 6097 Fright Knight's castle is readily available for $40 or less
on-line and in stores, you may want to pick it up.  The design is not
fantastic, but you get a few figs and some great basic elements like a large
portculis, arches, windows, and weapons.  You will need basic bricks to
supplement creations using this set, since it has many BURP/POOP type parts.

I also own several copies of all the Ninja sets, so you know where I stand.
I recommend if you are hesitant to acquire this theme, trade w/ another AFOL
for some Ninja theme stuff or scour your local retailers for discounted
sets.  The Ninja theme has been discontinued, so you'll probably be able to
find a few sets at a good price.  I will worn you that these sets have alot
of "short cut" pieces like too many 1x2x5 brick columns, 8x8 mega bricks,
very few basic brick elements etc.  These are an acquired taste also, you
really need a good supply of basic elements to create sturdy structures.

BUT, that said,I like the color variation of the Ninja theme sets and I
like many of the unique elements.  I especially like the large sloped rock
print wall sections...basically Ninja BURPS...they are historically
accurate, but sometimes challenging to integrate into your designs.  A
couple of the sets are easily adaptable to more traditional Euro-style
Castle designs if you don't like the theme, specifically:

4805 Fig pack
You get half of the figs found in the theme in one box.  The shogun
armor is cool and you can use it for Space Marines.  The generic Blue
Samurai torso can be easily adapted to a Euro kingdom w/ a change of helm
and weapons.  The Black and Gray Ninjas are kinda nifty to have too...

6088 Robber's Retreat
I picked up a few last year at BJ's wholesale at Christmas for under $20.
This set is mostly BURPS, but there are 4 figs, some green slope bricks and
brown log walls.  I like the large Square doors in Black, the only set w/
black ones IIRC. Most of the elements fit easy with regular Castle stuff.

6083 Samurai Stronghold
Small model, but some useful parts and 3 figs.  I found a couple on
clearnce for less than $10 (in battered boxes).  This set has the cool Large
wooden doors in brown, black slopes, and arches.

I could list more but you get the idea...you can take a chance buying the
above sets; if you don't like them, you aren't out alot of cash. (besides
you can trade them away to people like me)

With the new bulk brick sets, which would be better, then 1xn lots or
the 2xn lots. The 1xn figure well mainly in interior design with the
2xn maybe for external modelling.

It's up to you...your choice...your creation = )

BUT,
I am a big 1xn fan for structures...there is no hard and fast rule that
all castles have to be black or gray.  You might find the creative process
more enjoyable with a couple colors.  You may want to check eBay for the
auctioners that are parting out 3033 buckets (if you want basic colors other
than gray)

I have no idea what their is out there, any and all info would be
great!!!! (4500 headers still to download!).

Before I bought anything, I would cruise the Lugnet Castleworld group MOCs
and see which designs float your boat...If you like Ninja take a look at
Hopkin's Ninja superfortress (Baylug Way of the Sword), KK Quahs Fortress
tutorial page+MOC, and my Ninjada Gatehouse.

For Euro designs, there are so many, start w/ shiri's inn or Pawel's huge
fortress or Jeff's desert fortress, for instance.  (Heck take a look a few
topic lines down at Raska's new Castle)

Thoust must bidest thee farewell.
Jamie

Fair thee well,

Til we build again...

Blah, blah, blah snipped (...) I LOVE the Fright Knights Sets! They're part of what got me back into LEGO and out of my dark ages again! The color combinations I thought were cool. Plus, I like the bats..... (...) I will definitely agree the design (...) (24 years ago, 26-Jun-00, to lugnet.castle)
