You do see half timbered houses in the UK a fair bit usually in terraced
streets most frequently above shops. I've certainly seen more half timber
than full timber but I guess they last better.
As Lenny says extra floors were frequently added onto a house (nearly always
larger than the floor below as tax was based on the footprint of the house
if my memory is correct)
Also if you are a medieval / tudor builder and not a wizz at engineering,
stone makes a good strong foundation layer and wood a nice light upper
layer... or so I'd guess.

So, where does this idea come from, that the first floor is made of • stone?

I think you ask an interesting question... I don't know why I do it that • way,
mostly because everyone else does? Most of the early CCC buildings are • done that
way, Dan Siskind's Blacksmith Shop set is done that way, etc. I hope • bigger

I'm not a medievalist - I'm more of an aesthetic castler (going for the • look,

stone, or all timber, but there were a few that were half and half.  This • one
for example:

The lighting it poor, but you can tell the 1st and 2nd floors are two • different

in 1200 you're richer, but not so rich as to build a whole new house, so • you add
a timber 2nd floor.

But really, I do it for aesthetic purposes.  The contrast between grey • below and
black/white (or whatever color) on top looks really good and breaks up the
color-shapes in your village.  It isn't entirely grey, not entirely • timber - but
a little bit of both.
