So, where does this idea come from, that the first floor is made of stone?

I think you ask an interesting question... I don't know why I do it that way,
mostly because everyone else does? Most of the early CCC buildings are done that
way, Dan Siskind's Blacksmith Shop set is done that way, etc. I hope bigger
castle heads chime in with their thoughts too.

I'm not a medievalist - I'm more of an aesthetic castler (going for the look,
not accuracy) - but I did take a trip to England.  Most houses were either all
stone, or all timber, but there were a few that were half and half.  This one
for example:

The lighting it poor, but you can tell the 1st and 2nd floors are two different
things.  It makes sense to me - in ~1000AD your family builds a stone home, but
in 1200 you're richer, but not so rich as to build a whole new house, so you add
a timber 2nd floor.

But really, I do it for aesthetic purposes.  The contrast between grey below and
black/white (or whatever color) on top looks really good and breaks up the
color-shapes in your village.  It isn't entirely grey, not entirely timber - but
a little bit of both.
