Hi all!

Another example is new on BS, which in spired me to write this:

All houses seem to be build with the 1st floor of stone, the second floor and up
are half-timbered.
I wonder where this comes from, as a Dane I cannot recoqnise it. Half timbered
houses in Denmark are "full timbered" - like mine:

Walking though an ole place in Denmark would be something like:

So, where does this idea come from, that the first floor is made of stone?

Sonnich,

I know I've seen pictures of half-timbered houses in older German and French
villages, they may be more common there than in Denmark. The medieval city with
narrow streets and half-timbered houses overhanging the street at higher levels
is nearly a cliche.

I understand the reasoning is that wood will rot if left in contact with the
ground, so one needs at least a small stone foundation to make a half timbered
building that will last. I suppose if one then had the time and available stone,
making the first floor stone would give you an even longer lasting house.

Google has many pages of half timbered houses, it's always an interesting read.

Thanks,

George

(...) I add some pictures from 2004, of "full timbered"* houses. They do have a fundament, thourg small. (URL) links: (URL) Does "half timered" means, that the 1st floor is stones only? (19 years ago, 23-Nov-05, to lugnet.build.arch)
