Another trouble you touched on is out of sight, out of mind.  Without actual
sets, the theme is marginalized.  Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but
eventually.  Look at Pirates - yes, it has its fans, but few new fans are
recruited.

One of the troubles is theme overlap.  Harry Potter is too close to Castles to
support both lines, as are Star Wars and Space.  The overlap is not so obvious
with Adventurers and Pirates, but I've always felt that as long as Adventurers
is available, Pirates will not make a return.

Maybe less extensive lines and more themes?  Certainly the Harry Potter theme is
restrictive in the sense that they adventure in the same Castle every
book/movie.  Dunno, but I want regular Castles back with new releases.

That is what I keep wondering. There are still so many things that Lego can
explore with themes like Castle and Pirates. Heck Lego could even merge the two
themes and have medieval ships! Everything from Galleys, to Long Boats, to Trade
Cogs, to Fishing Boats and etc. They could even take advantage of the Chinese
style sails and make Sampans with a "Middle Kingdom" type theme.

Stuff like this would generate interest in kids and would be an alternative
option for those kids getting sucked into MegaBloks. *shudders*

Not only new themes, but they could add a story to a theme, much like what
they've done with Adventurers and Bionicle. They could create a Hero character
that much like Johnny Thunder travels all over the place and having adventures.
This hero minifig could sort of go from kingdom to kingdom on some kind of
quest. Entering certain kingdoms, he'd be obliged to help fight bad guys, tame
dragons, capture magical object, rescue maidens and etc. They could also add a
main villain as well.
