Gee, that seems quite wrong -- selling TLC copyrighted stuff for profit? I
can see the guy making back his costs in materials or something, but I bet at
approx. $10 a sheet hes doing more than that. Id feel differently if he
were selling his own designs. If these are TLCs stickers hes knocked off
-- thats pretty much like selling CDs of the brickshelf scans database.
|
Well, I think he is selling a value-added product that is worth the price he is
charging. He is also offering something that TLC hasnt produced for twenty
years and it sounds like he reverse-designed the patterns rather than merely
copied them. If TLC started producing the Yellow Castle again, it would be a
different story. But I think selling these to a handful of people who otherwise
could not get them is not hurting TLC.
|
What he should have done instead is make a PDF print out available for free
to other adult bricks enthusiasts -- thereby giving back to the community.
Those are not his designs from which to profit.
|
The thing that makes this product unique is the professional printer he is able
to use, though. These are much higher quality than what we could achieve at
home or even by going to a commercial printer. And I wonder if he is profitting
much...with small runs...I doubt it. Especially when his time is put into the
equation.
|
Theres a big difference between sharing something with other hobbyists for
the joy of the hobby and pirating/profiting from the property of another.
Actually making money from TLCs property is pretty much the limit.
BTW, yall may recall that before tudor walls came back into production I
made some poor man PDF stickers available myself of the tudor style wall
elements -- while paying homage to the original TLC design, the stickers were
actually something that had never existed before and thereby didnt truly
infringe on TLCs copyrighted designs. Also, I drew them from scratch myself
(of course, there being no original I could merely copy) and provided access
to the stickers for free to other hobbyists. I feel I can opine on this
sticker issue from a high moral position.
|
Yep, your approach is above reproach. I just think this person is not breaking
the spirit of the copyright protection at this point and is offering something
that TLC has no interest in producing. Plus, the only people who would want
these stickers are people who originally owned the sets (or bought a set from
someone who originally owned it), so TLC is not losing their profit on their
ideas.

| Hello! (...) I'm not sure about that. In fact I highly doubt that. I rather think that people who want to sell a 375/6075 but don't have enough original stickers buy these copies and fake the minifigs for the purpose of being able to sell a (...) (21 years ago, 17-Sep-03, to lugnet.castle, FTX)

| hmmm... if there is not a great profit - let him sell these stickers! :) the "real" collectors are warned if someone will sell a 375 on ebay with new-looking stickers anyway ! But my opinion is: don't fake it - restore it. Does anyone have a good (...) (21 years ago, 18-Sep-03, to lugnet.castle)
