Hi all,

I have heard a lot about this game, including here on Lugnet.castle, and
was wondering if someone who has it could answer a few questions about it:

1 Is it really as terrific as everyone says?

It has it's strengths and weaknesses.  If you don't like what is essentially
a medieval miniatures game with attached campaign game, then you won't like
it.  Seeing as how I use Lego for miniatures battles, I am a biased source.

2 What kind of computer would I neeed to run it well (graphics card, memory
etc)? I am getting a new PC as a graduation present and I want to make sure I
get one which I can play this game on.

I have a 1.6 Mhz, 256MB memory, and...and...dang, my wife stole my hot video
card because her CPU isn't as fast as mine, so I have the hand me down
GeForce2 with 32MB.  Doesn't seem to have any problems, even at 128 MB of
memory.  Where it starts to suffer I couldn't say, though.

3 For someone who hasn't tried many strategy games of this kind, will be it be
impossibly difficult, or is there a good learning curve?

Basic rules of medieval combat apply.  Attacking from the flank or rear is
good.  Being uphill is good.  Having support on a unit's flank makes them
happy.  Having your commander die is bad.  Getting stuck full of arrows is
disheartening.  Surprising a unit by charging out of the woods is good,
especially from the flank or rear.  Peasants are trash.  Over-pursuing can
be dangerous.  Knights are prone to over-pursue.  Getting exhausted means
you don't fight as well and your moral goes down.  Light Cav is worthless in
a stand-up fight, but in pursuit it maximizes the enemies losses...pretty
much historical concepts, except you don't need to crunch the numbers
yourself.  The strategic and economic models are not unique amongst computer
games, so that isn't as difficult (get lots of money and everything is easier).

4 Basically, how does it all work, what are the highlights of the game, and is
there anything that isn't so cool, or could be improved?

16 units at a time per side.  I just fought a battle where the other side
had 96 units, with the ones off-map coming on only when a unit routes.  I
used only 18 units to stand off all 96 of the opposition, but it took a
looooooong time to finish (my finest victory, that I saved off as The Hill
Slaughter with over 2000 enemy slain).  Conquering 60% of
Europe/NorthAfrica/Mideast takes a long time, and can become apparent that
no one can stop you long before it actually happens, to say nothing of
conquering it all, and when you do, there is no score, you just win.  There
are lots of layers to the game (emmisaries, spies, assassins, clergy,
Crusades, excommunication, Jihads, revolts, civil war, taxation, zeal,
weddings, alliances, succession, vices, virtues, generalship ratings,
production, strategy, tactics, etc.).  Some of it can be ignored without
undue harm, and some of it can be put on auto-pilot.  Like Civilization, if
you get a really large empire going it can be a lot of logistics to manage.

Unlike the Samurai version, Medieval has a diversity and richness to the
units that makes it far more interesting.  I launched a major campaign
against the Holy Roman Empire (Germans) after the Pope excommunicated them
just so I could get at Swiss pikemen.  And you *have* to take Wales as the
English to get Longbowmen.  What kind of Black Prince would you be without them?
