Funny isn't it. If Goodrich was about 30 miles away from you, I'd bet you
would have been there by now. I've lived that close to it all my life and I
have never been there. I've lived in Cardiff for 27 years and never been
inside the castle proper (I've been inside the grounds) Castell Coch, less
than 2 miles from my house, never been inside. (I actually have 3 castles
within 2 miles of my house and one iron age hill fort). I guess you get kind
of used to them being there and never really get round to it.

As for rebuilding, lots of castles are getting rebuilt slowly. I'll see if I
can find photos for Caerphilly castle circ. 1800 when it had been abandoned
for 100's of years. Lots of it has been renovated (always deliberately using
a slightly different colour brick when replacing stones to show what is
original or not.) similarly Caldicot castle has been rescued from ruin and
has been partially rebuilt over the last 100 years or so - take a look at
their website (done by the company I work for :) )
http://www.caldicotcastle.co.uk/ I'm hoping to get married there next year
(funds permitting).
Castles I think are cool are Caldicot, St Mawes in Cornwall (a C16 atillery
castle) and for a nice reasonably complete Norman Castle then theres
Pembroke http://www.castlewales.com/pembroke.html
