Years ago, when I had all the time in the world, I busied myself by making chainmail. Lots and lots of it. I’ve made hauberks, chausses, byrnies, vests, coifs, mantles, gloves, and other stuff, like some crazy knit-happy grandmother. The constraints of reality and gainful employment have drastically reduced the time I spend on this iron-rich diversion, but I still have an interest.

Recently a friend, who knows of my hobby, asked if I had any rendered images of chainmail. At the time, I didn’t, but it occurred to me that LDraw, L3P, and POV-Ray might provide a means to create the images he sought. The bottom image on this page shows one example of the results.

I post this here because I seem to recall a not-so-long-ago query about what other kinds of work people have been doing with LDraw. Ryan Farrington, for example, has made some really nice K’Nex and Lincoln Log DATfiles, showcased here. In my case, I made a cylindrical ring to represent the link “part,” and I created two files in which the link was tilted at 20 degrees and -20 degrees to aid in the actual linking of links. Also, each link had inlined POV-Ray code to swap the raw cylinder with a torus, complete with a little snippet out of it to simulate the point where the link was closed into the pattern.

Really, this is just for fun. The actual shapes into which chainmail can be formed would probably make it difficult to use LDraw as a blueprinting method. Still, it makes a cool desktop background.

Enjoy or revile as you see fit!

Dave!
