Heh heh.  This topic deserves a FAQ all to itself, I think.

Anyway, if you see a four or five digit number embossed on the part,
that should be the number.  Usually the number is embossed on the inside
of the part, often in the smallest nook or cranny.

Some parts have been released with different numbers, so you can't
always count on the embossed number.  The 4x4 radar dish is one example.

Some parts have been released in different versions, but the same
number.  In this case, we append letters (a, b, c, ...) on the end of
the number to denote the versions.

Sometimes part numbers are known from old lists.

If no part number is known, we use a three-digit number, with an x on
the front (like x100.dat).  Since there are only so many numbers
available, we avoid giving these numbers out until files are ready for
submission to the library.  Some regular authors have ranges of 3-digit
numbers reserved for their use.

That's a quick list of part number issues.  Hope it helps.

Thanks for the help the minifigs guys. As for part numbers, here the story: A while back I was looking for a part to go in a technic model I was building. After looking up the number at Technica, I serched lugnet.cad.parts to find the particular (...) (23 years ago, 10-Jun-01, to lugnet.cad, lugnet.cad.mlcad)
