And your right.  That does sorta make it look more like a raytracing contest.
To be honest, I like the idea of having a 'pure' model-oriented contest, one
where the merits of the only the model are used to pick the winner.
But on the other hand, I do like and appreciate a good scene.

What do others think?  Should we have two categories?
A "basic" category that features no supporting background or scene.
And a "scene" category for those wishing to put the effort into creating it.

Well, if these two are created, I probably wouldn't be voting in
the model-only contest.  It sounds too much like work  <G>.  I vote
for MOTM because there's nice eye-candy and it's fun.  The model-only
contest implies that I have to scrutinize the entries for cleverness
of construction and/or advanced use of CAD tools (I'm not sure which
if not both).  That's just too much time and not as much fun, and
requires some degree of judging skill on my part.

The "scene" category however is based on visual impact and Neat-O(tm)
rating.  When I go there now the first one that makes me say, "Whoa,
neat!" is probably the one I vote for.  There will be others there
that I really like too, but maybe I'll get them next month.  It's
not terribly scientific.  Too me it's the equivalent of these little
polls that people stick on their websites, only much more fun.  In
general, scene-type entries don't win as much with me unless the
surrounding scene is also LEGO, meaning it's just one very large
model.  "Non-LEGO" scenes don't have as much impact for me..., although
this month there was one exception!

Should a model-only category appear, I don't think restrictions
should be placed on rendering.  Without rendering you have crappy
images, and people can't tell what they're looking at.  Maybe just
add a rule that backgrounds must be monochromatic or something.  I
still think the entries need to be judgeable entirely from the
website, without any additional effort required from the voters
(such as following links, downloading .DATs, etc.).

For that matter, I wonder if the current links to additional images
should be disallowed from the entries, until the contest is over?
Make everybody have to give it their best shot with one single
view.  Again keeping it simple is the idea (yes I know the links
are "voluntary" if a voter wants to follow them).

(...) But what would be an allowable entry in 'LDRAWn'? A bmp. output of the actual original LDraw? Or include outputs or screenshots of LDLite, MLCad, LDView, BlockCAD, and others? Perhaps restrict model entries to a basic rendered output available (...) (23 years ago, 27-May-01, to lugnet.cad.dev.org.ldraw)
