I stick with DAT for vanilla LDraw files.  For other files files, I've been
using:

LDL - LDLite extensions (especially if I 'm going to eventually convert the
file to vanilla LDraw).
LDS - LDScript source.

I'd use LDR instead of DAT for vanilla LDraw files, but DAT is too
well-established as a default.  Unfortunately, it's also very widely-used
as the extension for miscellaneous data files.

Yeah, I think it was an unfortunate choice to use DAT.  It is way to common.
LDR would have been a better choice.  But I just live with it.
