Hi Brian.

Is there an interactive (OpenGL-based, for example) Datsville/LDraw
viewer?  If so, what platforms does it run on?

One is being developed at the moment. It seems to run on
Linux, MacOS, and MS-Windows (of some kind).

Are there programs to convert LDraw files to other common 3D file
formats, other than POVRAY?

I think there are programs to convert to and from some CAD
formats.

Specifically, I'd like to convert LDraw models into a 3D file format
compatible with SGI Performer (http://www.sgi.com/software/performer/).
With perfly (the Performer-based viewing program) you could fly around/
through the models in realtime.

I don't think we have a program for that yet, but it would
definitely be cool.

Ideally, the LDraw file format would support multiple-LOD (level of
detail) models and model heirarchies for efficient culling.  I doubt
LDraw has anything like that.  My quick look at it gives the impression
that it's a very primitive file format.

The LDraw file format is definitely rather primitive, but
there is a bit of level-of-detail handling in the system,
and more can be provided when translating to other formats,
if you care to hand-code the primitives and/or parts in the
target format (l3p does a bit of that).

Development of LDraw related tools is discussed at
http://www.lugnet.com/cad/dev/. You are welcome to join the
discussion there.

Play well,

Jacob
